My dad started losing his eyesight as a young man due to the chemicals, heat and gas etc he was exposed to working with aircraft maintenance. In those days safety precautions like protective glasses were not a priority and employers did not really bother.

By the time he retired he had lost most of his sight in one eye and slowly the other eye started to deteriorate.
