A Strong Educational Foundation
My schooling years were steeped in the cultural and historical influences of Mumbai’s Portuguese and British heritage. I attended St. Teresa’s Convent High School for my primary and secondary education, followed by St. Xavier’s College for my higher studies.
It was during this time that my curiosity about computers began to take shape. My dad often spoke about the evolving role of computers, particularly how they were automating tasks on new aircraft. These stories sparked my interest and planted the seeds for my future career in programming.
Starting My Career in Computers
After graduating with a degree in Mathematics and Statistics, I pursued a diploma in systems analysis and design. This training prepared me to step into the world of computer programming.
My first job was with Nelco, a company specializing in midi computers. Early in my tenure, I was sent as part of an onboarding team to help set up a new computer system at Cadbury’s India in Haji Ali. Cadbury’s had just invested in building a computer department, and I was there to assist with their new installation.
Joining Cadbury’s India
My time at Cadbury’s was both enriching and rewarding. I quickly grew to enjoy the work environment and my colleagues, and when the company offered me a position, I gladly accepted.
One of my initial projects was developing a purchase order solution. This program helped streamline the procurement of raw materials based on inventory levels and future production plans. The challenge of coding such a solution was exhilarating and laid the groundwork for many similar projects in the years ahead.
Sweet Perks of the Job
One of the highlights of working with Cadbury’s was visiting their factories in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. These trips involved discussions on production plans and optimizing the bill of materials—but they also came with an added bonus: tasting experimental chocolates fresh from the factory! These moments added an unexpected layer of joy to my professional life.
Mentoring and Giving Back
Over the years, I had the privilege of mentoring interns—bright young graduates eager to learn about computers and programming. This role became a personal learning experience as well, allowing me to grow as a professional.
Even after moving to Oslo, I’ve continued this tradition by working with summer interns and new joiners. Helping others navigate the early stages of their careers remains a deeply fulfilling part of my journey.
Reflections on a City of Possibilities
Looking back, I realize how much growing up in Mumbai, with its rich cultural and historical heritage, shaped my life and career. The blend of Portuguese and British influences wasn’t just an abstract concept—it was a tangible part of my education, work, and opportunities.
These experiences not only gave me a career but also taught me to appreciate the beauty of mentorship and continuous learning.
