Why patient advocacy is important to me

I believe in the power of knowledge sharing and collaboration and have been a volunteer with the Norwegian Computer society (Dataforeningen) in Oslo for many years. Following my cancer diagnosis in 2021, it felt natural to move my focus from the data community to improving the lives of people living with lung cancer.

I joined Lungekreftforeningen (Norwegian Lung Cancer Association) in 2022 and have been an active patient advocate, sharing my experiences as a patient and trying to raise awareness of symptoms and lung cancer risks – because early detection saves lives.

Together with Lung cancer Europe, I am now part of a community that puts patients at the center – building bridges of knowledge, empathy, and action across borders.

The Lung cancer Europe campaigns Get Checked encourages people to take symptoms seriously and pay attention to their lung health. It is a reminder that any one with lungs can get lung cancer. The focus for 2025 is ‘Get supported’. It reminds me why patient advocacy is important to me : because no one should have to face lung cancer alone.
